The Most Useful Plant

Updated: Sep 6, 2021

If you know me personally, you probably know what I am going to say is the most useful plant: hemp. The uses for the hemp plant are much more significant than any other plant, even though many plants do serve multiple purposes. There is no plant more versatile and useful than hemp. We will cover the many uses of the hemp plant and then you can decide if you agree.

  1. Textiles. The stalk of the hemp plant can be used to create textiles. This means it can be used to create cloth. Some of the more common items made with hemp include: clothing, purses, denim, shoes, and lighter fabrics. Heavier items include rope, canvas, and tarps. As you can see, it is a very versatile fabric producer.

  2. Paper. The stalk of the hemp plant can also be used to create paper. This ranges from newspaper to cardboard. So, it can be used to create the lightest weight paper or the heaviest variety available. This is a much safer alternative to using trees to produce paper because the amount of greenhouse gasses produced from deforestation are staggering in comparison with harvesting other plants.

  3. Building materials. The stalk of the hemp plant can be used for a variety of building materials. Hemp stalk can create a safe alternative to using fiberglass in building. It can also be used to create acrylics, caulking, netting, and carpeting.

  4. Food. Hemp seeds can be used to create oil usable in cooking, protein powder, and hemp seed hearts.

  5. Industrial products. Printing ink, solvents, varnishes, and oil paints can all be created using the seeds of the hemp plant.

  6. Fuel. Yes, hemp can even be used as a fuel. The oils produced by the seeds can be extracted and turned into fuel. This is obviously a much better alternative to fossil fuels which are an unsustainable form of fuel.

  7. Body care. The oil produced by the seeds is useful in many body care products. I have used hempseed oil to create soaps, lip balms, lotions, and facial oil. Hempseed oil in body care products is beneficial because it is moisturizing, it fights acne, it does not leave a greasy residue on your skin, and it provides natural protection against the sun. If you are interested in homemade hempseed oil products, you can find some on my Etsy shop.

  8. Medicine. The roots and leaves of the hemp plant both have medicinal properties. It can be used for chronic pain and medical conditions which result in pain, such as fibromyalgia. It is commonly used in the treatment of depression, cancer, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis.

  9. Animal bedding. The leaves of the hemp plant are very absorbent, making them very good bedding for small pets.

  10. Compost. The leaves and roots of the plant are nutrient dense. This makes them ideal for use in compost because it creates a richer compost which is nourishing for your plants.

Hemp is truly a versatile and amazing plant with so many different uses. There is not a part of the hemp plant which can not be used for some purpose. Not only does it provide many different benefits, it is a better (and more sustainable) alternative to many of the products we use every day.
