Upcycled Bottles

Updated: Sep 6, 2021

I love wine. This creates a dilemma for me. What to do with the wine bottles? Fortunately, there are options.

Your options will vary based upon the tools at your disposal. But for each option you will most likely have to remove the label from the bottle. Unfortunately, when dealing with stickers you are often left with a residue on the bottle, or have a difficult time removing the sticker at all.

In order to remove the sticker, you will need a couple of things: vegetable oil, baking soda, and steel wool. Combine equal parts baking soda and vegetable oil and stir. Apply the combination to the sticker residue and allow to sit for at least half an hour. After the bottle has soaked for half an hour, scrub with steel wool and hot water. This makes the label much easier to remove.

After removing the label, you have some options for what to do with your bottle. I like to paint my bottles and use them for home décor.

You can cut wine bottles and make a variety of items. A few examples include: vases, indoor planters, candles, and drinking glasses. Your options are only limited by your imagination. Here is a tutorial on how to cut bottles with things you should already have at home.

If you have a kiln you can flatten wine bottles to make small serving trays or utensil rests for your stovetop.
