You may be asking yourself, "what is plarn?" Plarn is plastic bags cut and tied in such a way to create a ball of yarn.
Like most people, I am sure you have a plethora of plastic bags and probably don't know what to do with them. Recycling them (although not in a traditional recycling bin) is an option. They can be dropped of in some grocery stores in designated bins. However, reusing and upcycling is always a better option.
Plarn is a great material to make items which need to be water proof, such as beach bags and shower caddy's. It creates very durable products. Working with plarn can result in getting ink on your hands when the bags have printing on them and is more difficult than working with traditional yarn because it is a more resistant material.
The only materials you need to make plarn are scissors and plastic bags.
Take a plastic bag and lay it flat.
Fold the bag accordion style lengthwise.
Cut the bottom and handles off of the bag, making sure you have a straight line at both ends.
4. Cut the bag in equal strips approximately 1 inch wide.
5. Using two of the strips, place one through the center of another and fold it over and pull through, creating a continuous strand.
6. Continue the entire process until you have sufficient plarn for your desired project.
