Believe it or not, many of the ingredients commonly used in haircare and skincare products are harmful to you and can actually irritate your skin or worse. Some of the common ingredients are actually carcinogenic. Formaldehyde is actually a common ingredient found in skin and haircare products, it often appears on the ingredients list as quaternium-15. Formaldehyde is linked to cancer, asthma, and neurotoxicity. We will briefly cover some of the common ingredients found in different products and what their effects they can have on your skin and body.

Silicones cause hair to be dry and brittle. Diethanolamine/Triethanolamine are both toxic, can cause organ damage, and are carcinogenic. Polyethylene Glycol is carcinogenic, strips hair of natural oils, and weakens the immune system. Parabens can result in hair loss, affect the immune system, and can cause breast cancer.

So, now that you know about all of the harmful chemicals hiding in your skin care and hair care products, let's talk about what you can do to avoid these chemicals. Products labeled as all natural and organic may not always be as transparent as they claim to be. Check the list of ingredients and avoid buying any items with ingredients you can't pronounce. The only chemical which should be in your shampoo and soap is lye, and it is possible to make other products with no chemicals.
Under the how-to section there are recipes for all natural soap and lotion bars. You can also check my Etsy shop for soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc. free of chemicals.
The next time you are shopping for skin care and hair care products, consider the consequences of the items you are using.
