10 Less Commonly Recycled Items

Updated: Aug 30, 2021

If you are like most people, you probably think of recycling in terms of plastic bottles, cardboard, and cans. However, recycling doesn't end there. Many products we use every single day can actually be recycled, and for the most part, you don't have to go out of your way to recycle them. We are going to talk about some of the items you probably discard in the trash every day that could be recycled instead.

  1. Aluminum Foil. If you have used foil that is clean, it can be recycled. This also applies to Hershey Kiss wrappers. You can recycle these with other metals.

  2. Office Paper. Regular office paper used to require special recycling centers. However, most recycling centers now accept office paper.

  3. Paperboard. Paperboard is thin cardboard that is commonly used for many products such as cereal. In the past this was not a recyclable material, however, it can now be recycled with other cardboard and paper products.

  4. Plastic Bags. Although plastic bags cannot be recycled with most other recyclable materials, many grocery stores have recycling receptacles available for plastic bags.

  5. Electronics. Many electronics stores, such as Best Buy provide recycling for free to customers. Simply take your old electronic devices to customer service and let them know that you are recycling them.

  6. CFL Light Bulbs. Energy efficient light bulbs can be recycled. Although you can not put them in with regular recycling, places such as Lowes accept these. However, incandescent light bulbs are not recyclable.

  7. Batteries. Batteries are another item which can't go in with the majority of your household recyclables, but there are places which accept them for recyclables, such as Lowes.

  8. Plastic Plant Pots. Depending on your local recycling center, you may be able to dispose of these with the rest of your household recyclables (just check the plastic number before throwing it in with the rest of your items.) If not, Lowes once again comes to the rescue and is willing to take these off of your hands to recycle them. Just make sure they are clean.

  9. Bubble Wrap. Although most bubble wraps are plastic number 1 or 2, they can't be disposed of with the rest of your recyclable items. It can be recycled with your plastic bags.

  10. Take Out Containers. Take out containers, including paper bags, plastic containers, and cardboard can be recycled if they are not saturated in grease. Make sure to check your local recycling center and the number of the plastic to make sure it is recyclable at your center. These can go out with your other household items.
