Get Outside to Exercise

Updated: May 7, 2021

Rather than going to an overcrowded and loud gym, try taking your workout outdoors.

There are a variety of benefits derived from working out in nature rather than being in a gym or working out indoors:

Concentration

Studies have shown an improvement in concentration which occurs when you spend time in nature. This benefit can last hours after you go inside. Therefore, simply spending time outdoors can make you more productive. I think we can all agree that is something we need.

Creativity

Nature can cause an increase in creativity.

Vitamin D

Your body will naturally absorb Vitamin D from being in the sunlight. Vitamin D is a mood booster and can help you naturally fight depression.

Immunity Boost

Phytoncides are naturally produced by plants. These chemicals naturally increase the white blood cells, which help you fight off infections.

Sleep

Being outdoors also naturally increases the quality of your sleep.

Social

I find this to be the most important part of my time spent hiking, I get to bring my dog! Plus, she gets to exercise too (very important for huskies). If you don't have a dog, you could bring your children or go with friends. It is a great way to bond.

Save Money

Why spend money on a gym membership to get on a treadmill and stare at a TV screen? I don't know about you, but that makes me feel drained rather than invigorated. I want a workout that makes me feel like I did something good for my body and mind.

Save Electricity

Why use gym equipment that runs on electricity when you could get the same (or better) workout in nature?

Many Cities have Metro Parks. These are parks which have hiking trails, biking trails, picnic pavilions, and sometimes other features such as lakes with kayak rentals, park equipment for children to play on, and even some equipment for body-weight exercises.
