Small Steps to Conserve Water

Updated: Sep 6, 2021

Logically, we all know that water is not a limitless resource. There are some things you can do in order to reduce your water consumption, both through behaviors that reduce your water consumption and through the products that you purchase and use every day.

Small modifications you can make in your daily life include not running the water the whole time you are brushing your teeth or handwashing dishes. Simply turning off the water while performing daily tasks and only using it when necessary can significantly decrease the amount of water wasted every year.

I personally keep a reusable water bottle with me every day. I do not always finish the water I have in the bottle. At the end of the day I use the remaining water to water my houseplants so that it is not wasted by being poured down the drain.

Industrially, one of the largest water consumers is the production of plastic. Plastics are great and have improved lives in many ways, but the consumption of single-use plastic products poses a great threat to the environment. I have reduced my use of disposable plastics by creating my own hygiene products which have no plastic containers or unnecessary wrappers. Or you can try creating some of your own products, more on that later.

Additionally, I have found some amazing products on Amazon which are reusable and can both save you money and reduce your overall waste (water/trash) because they are not single use items. Other items to consider are reusable water bottles and coffee cups. These can also save you money if you are not purchasing pre-bottled water on the go. Many companies (such as Sheetz, Starbucks, and Dunkin) offer free or discounted coffee refills just for bringing in your own cup. I have also attached links to other products I use which are available for purchase on Amazon*.
