There are more reasons to ditch your pre-bottled water than you might think. Plastic water bottles are made with plastics number 1&2. These bottles contain BPA's, which are carcinogenic. The BPA's leak from the plastic into the water contained within the bottle when exposed to heat (such as during transportation or if stored in a warm area).
Aside form the health risks associated with drinking pre-bottled water, there is also the issue of discarding the item. Most people do not like to carry waste on them, and if your workplace is anything like mine, there is no recycling available. So, most people would choose to throw their water bottle away in the trash rather than hold on to it for recycling later.
The majority of reusable plastic products on the market are now BPA free. This is especially important when considering plastics you will be heating (for instance if you pack a microwavable lunch). My favorite thing about bringing my reusable water bottle to work is adding fruit to my water to add nutrients and flavor.
Some people avoid buying reusable water bottles because they worry about the cleanliness of the water from public sources. However, pre-bottled water comes from tap water. Why pay for something when it is the exact same quality you would get if you went to your own sink, and a lower quality than what you have at home if you use water bottles. If this is a concern you have, they also make water bottles which contain water filters, so you never have to be concerned again about not drinking filtered water.
